At the Gold River Fire Department, we are always working hard to ensure we're ready for any situation that may arise in our unique and beautiful community. This month, we’re proud to announce that our members successfully completed a comprehensive High Angle Rope Rescue training session—a crucial skill set designed specifically for the rugged and challenging terrain we call home.

Why Rope Rescue Matters for Gold River
Situated amid mountains, rivers, and forests, Gold River offers endless opportunities for adventure. Along with that beauty comes the potential for emergencies in hard-to-reach locations—whether it’s a hiker stranded on a steep hillside, an injured climber, or someone an MVA on the highway. Standard rescue operations may not be enough in these situations; specialized skills and equipment are required to ensure everyone’s safety.

What is High Angle Rope Rescue?
High Angle Rope Rescue involves using technical rope systems to safely reach, treat, and extract people from steep environments where traditional rescue methods aren’t possible. It requires careful planning, teamwork, and precision, as well as advanced knowledge of knots, pulley systems, anchors, and specialized equipment.
During our latest training, Gold River Fire Department members practiced:
- Proper use of harnesses, helmets, and rope systems
- Setting up and operating haul and lowering systems
- Building secure anchor points in various environments
- Managing safe patient packaging and transport
- Effective communication and teamwork under pressure
Our team was able to simulate real-life scenarios that we might encounter in Gold River, ensuring that everyone is prepared to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.

What This Means for Our Community
By continually investing in this type of advanced training, our department is better equipped to respond swiftly and safely should a rope rescue ever be required. We want Gold River residents and visitors to know that if the unexpected happens—whether on a hike, an outdoor job site, or on the drive to Campbell River—you have a well-trained team ready to help.
High angle rescues are complex, and safety is always our top priority—for those in need and for our responders. We’re grateful for the commitment shown by our volunteers, who give their time and energy to master these challenging skills and protect our community.

Thank You for Your Support
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the community for your ongoing support, as well as to the instructors and volunteers who made this training possible. Keeping Gold River safe is a team effort, and your encouragement helps us reach new heights—literally and figuratively!
As always, if you have questions about our training or want to learn about volunteering, please reach out. We’re stronger together!
Stay safe, Gold River!
